This text offers medical students a case-based approach to learning mechanisms of renal disease. Each chapter covers a disease and begins with a patient case, followed by discussion of the pathophysiology of the disease. Issues of differential diagnosis and therapy are linked to pathophysiologicmechanisms. Short questions interspersed in the text require students to apply their knowledge, and detailed answers to the questions are given. This edition includes a full-color insert and an appendix of normal lab values.

Description: Like the first edition of 1994, this second edition provides a solid, broad understanding of the mechanismsunderlying kidney dysfunction and disease. It is nicely structured in chapters with summaries, questions/answers, case presentations, and excellent illustrations.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide students with a solid understanding of the mechanisms that result in kidney dysfunction and disease and to serve as the basic reading material and text for a course in kidney pathophysiology. These worthy objectives are met by the book.
Audience: As stated by the authors, who are international authorities, the book is primarily intended for students (medical students, residents, nephrology fellows). However, it is so well done that faculty as well as interested lay persons can all find valuable information in it, too.
Features: The book comprehensively covers all aspects of kidney function in health and its alterations in kidney disease, acute and chronic. It is written, illustrated, and structured very well with a useful mix of case vignettes, summaries, questions, and two-color illustrations that are clear and helpful.
Assessment: The strength of this book is its didactic clarity, conciseness, and structure, reflected in its compact paperback format while preserving its comprehensiveness. It thus occupies an important niche as a more affordable and easily portable resource still containing much of the material typically found in much larger and more expensive hardcover volumes. Its updated format clearly justifies thesecond edition.
